Watches, brand positioning and why brands cant "be just like Rolex".
#NSOW
For your awareness some things about me and the channel.
I'm an engineer who's into human behavior, loves the ideas behind art and sees watches as a mix of science, craft, art, business, history, technology, philosophy, and psychology. As a result, my videos cover all that ground. (Oh, and I overthink everything).
In my opinion a $15 Casio or a $50 G-Shock are probably the only real tool watches and pretty much everything else is jewelry. So as we are talking about jewelry I think style is substance and I tend to believe history, brand, style, design, execution, and aesthetics are more important than specs. A dull design with a good movement is a dull watch, and an exciting design with an average movement is an exciting watch.
To be clear, I hate the expression "it's just a watch". If you got this far, watches matter to you and represent a bridge between us - dismissing them as unimportant seems wrong and disrespectful. That doesn't mean we can't and don't have fun, it just means we should not be totally mindless of others.
I'm a watch collector and curator - I like my collections to have a theme. My collection has several themes:
1. Vintage Alpina watches
2. Travel watches (GMT. UTC, world timers, home times, dual times)
3. Seiko Prospex dive watches
4. Breitling chronographs
5. Stuff I just really like.
I don't do wrist checks so if you want to see what I'm wearing, my collection, and other random bits of my life check out my Instagram:

#NSOW A common complaint about watches, especially Omegas and Grand Seikos, actually has little to do with the watch, often its a complaint about an accessory, the bracelet. Even more interesting ofen the complaint concerns a lack a micro-adjust, and they are often compared to (and found wanting against) Tudors with their T fit and Rolex with their on the fly adjustments. Love your channel. Very interesting analysis, Pete. The categories you present arguably reflect my mood, or the reason why I reach for one or other of my watches on any given day. So, whilst I understand that brands might not overlap ‘luxury & premium’ or ‘prestige & connoisseur’, I think that on occasions, I do.

I don’t think Bremont is dead. Bremont still makes good watches. I am not keen on the new logo and the new Terra Nova Field watches design. But actually some people whom have seen the new design in the flesh say they are a lot nicer than on the advertising blurb . So I will wait until I actually see them. I have a Bremont S301 Supermarine and I love it. Its quality compared to CW overall is much better , but it’s what you pay for. Both brands can survive alongside each other . CW are clever at sales & outsourcing but they target 1 area of market. Bremont will do some outsourcing too but are much more in-house and use superior materials overall hence the price point .

Thank you for this video. I'm new to the channel and already loving it This so called ambassadors are simply well paid, well known people who just plays in commercials. I don't think there is anything wrong with it but this is why very well made watch we would pay let's say 2K we will need to spend 5K I have many watches that are in. my opinion well made but I didn't loose fortune on any of them and most of those brands are very little known to masses. Alpina is very good example how very known good quality watch is not as expensive as Oris which is spending a lots of money on advertisement and someone will need to eat the bill. I stiłl like Oris but the budget isn't there anymore...

Great analysis and very well explained! Love the example of the moonswatch; luxury is usually expensive but it doesn’t have to be. Also the Rolex / Patek / CW ads you show back up the story perfectly 👍

🤦‍♂️ the premise of the video is boring. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but posing this opinion that it is boring is so unproductive and obtuse in thought. What’s significant about this model is that it will be literally Timeless. That’s the significance of this particular model. It has rose to the highest escoleon of its design language and maintained it with the original DNA. Not like a modern Submariner which has modern material and design language like a lacquered dial and ceramic bezel. The point is that in 50 years the monochrome will harken to the original design language of what the original intent was 70 years ago but it will still have the ability to still look relatively new based on the conditions of the piece. This is why the Speedmaster is a greater watch than the Submariner. Throughout all the years it still looks like an original. That’s the real significance of why this piece is so special. It will sit atop of all other black bays; It will be an all time GOAT in 50+ years.

What you will get is perpetual Rolex positioning as No. 1 without them meaningfully growing. Think Nike when it comes to sneakers. They've been No. 1 for years despite not grabbing huge new shares of market. Rolex is Nike is McDonalds. Anyone who thinks another brand will usurp Rolex as No. 1 is delusional.

Your excellent critique of the Alpina pilot's watch put me in mind of another watch brand that also provides solid, functional fliegers that seemingly 'fly' below most people's radar; Fortis. I have an F-39 Fleiger that has a design language all its own. The dial adheres to pilot watch norms (like the Alpina), but the case and bracelet scream indistinguishable.

Own two thirty-year Breitling watches bought in the 1990s. A Shark and a Colt Ocean. Only a little has caught my eye since then until I saw this new Superocean. A bold, courageous, welcomed shift with an acknowledgement of historic DNA. A stunning watch that captures yesterday, today and tomorrow. The yellow dial Superocean with the red second-hand is breathtaking. Dates are for calendars and cell phones. Watches are about time and personality. Stunning.

I think the characterisation of enthusiasts as continually flipping and FOMO and hence the negative points you made is simplifying the alternative to the collector. What if you had the philosophy of a collector. I.e. keep the watches you buy, only buy what you like, buy with a purpose. But with the enthusiasts desire to have no overarching plan, but instead focussing on variety in your collection.

Great review, thank you 🙂👍. Was thinking when I saw that white date wheel oh man might look better cream like the markers. Also, agree on not luming the numbers. Same with my ss chrono gmt, would make night legibility much better. But that's it: beautiful watch you have there. Oh! Also, have to disagree with Breitling moving in the "Instruments for Professionals" direction. If anything, they have been moving AWAY from that since the start of the Kerns era, which to me is unfortunate.
